The Midea U smart window air conditioner (and subsidiary brands) that I have previously highlighted on this list was recalled in June 2025 because of mold complaints. If you have one of these models, I have outlined all the recall information that you need to know to take action. 

SereneLife SLPAC240W

A portable AC unit brings you more flexible positioning than window devices, and they won't draw the ire of nitpicky HOA officials.

The SereneLife SLPAC240W lets you enjoy that convenience and excellent cooling chops for a portable unit.

Portable units are often less powerful than similarly rated window ACs, but that’s not the case here. The SereneLife has plentiful cooling power, with ice-cold air blowing through the louvers.

This AC has no problems whatsoever cooling large spaces up to the rated 380 square feet, and it can perform adequately in an even bigger room all the while occupying a fairly small physical footprint.

You could also do what I did during my tests and set up a fan in a doorway to distribute the cooled air across multiple smaller rooms. Get a tower or desk fan with a decent CFM to circulate the air properly, and you're golden.

Either way, the SereneLife does its job well.

Drainage is always a concern with portable air conditioners, but SereneLife minimizes the issue. It has low condensation production, and I rarely had to drain it.

You may need to empty the water reservoir more often if you live in a high-humidity region, though.

The SereneLife offers basic 3-in-1 functionality with AC, fan, and dehumidifier modes alongside multi-speed fan settings. There's no sleep or eco mode, which is a bit of a bummer, but it keeps the usability simple.

The included remote control continues the theme of simplicity. It has no backlight or display, but it functions well enough to be a welcome addition to the unit.

SereneLife has constructed this AC with care. The build quality is good, and the unit feels sturdy. It's a bit heavy and tall, but that just shows how robust the machine is. Despite the heft, I had no problems rolling this thing around.

With regular basic maintenance, you can expect your AC to last a long while.

If something happens to go wrong, though, Pyle Crop (the actual manufacturer) offers first-grade customer service — even if your one-year warranty has expired.

The only thing I can grumble about is the low energy efficiency that all portable ACs suffer from. With a 10.52 EER rating, you might notice a bump in your electricity bill as compared to a Window AC owing to higher running costs.

Another downside is that unlike many other portable AC units, this does not feature an auto-evaporating function like the Black+Decker portable model does, hence correct drainage will be very important.

I’d say the strong cooling capacity is worth it, though. The SereneLife works exactly as advertised, which you can’t say for all portable units.

LG LW1216ER

Admittedly, 12,000 BTU air conditioners can be pricey. However, machines like the LG LW1216ER show that you can get powerful cooling at a good value.

You might think that a lower price point would compromise an AC’s cooling power, but that’s not the case here.

This LG unit pumps out a lot of cool air, providing quick and efficient cooling within the rated 550 square foot coverage area.

The AC also has the punch to tackle an even larger challenge. Even in a space almost 700 square feet in size, I noticed the temperature dropping within 30 minutes after turning the LG on.

The LG boasts the usual AC, fan, and dehumidifier modes, in addition to a programmable timer and an energy saver mode. There’s no sleep mode, which might not make this an ideal unit for bedrooms.

Then again, the noise level is reasonable, and it does run quieter than most units in this BTU range.

Controlling this air conditioner is straightforward, and the remote control is responsive with good use angles. It is basic in terms of functionality, but it works — which is the most important factor.

This Energy Star rated unit has a 12 EER rating, so you can rely on the energy consumption staying in check.

The energy savings add to the overall value, as does the very robust construction. Give your LG AC basic care, and it can serve you for years.

The robustness makes this a very heavy air conditioner that needs an outdoor support bracket. Fortunately, it has an easy installation process, thanks to the slide-out chassis.

Pull the AC unit out, mount the featherweight chassis to the window, and slip the AC back in.

Due to the slide-out design, you could conceivably install this window unit into a wall, like the Keystone through-the-wall unit.

This AC is also fairly big and will not fit in very small windows. Measure your window opening carefully before you commit to a purchase.

At least you get a lot of air conditioner for your money — literally. In terms of price, power, and energy consumption, this LG machine makes an offer that’s hard to refuse.

Keystone KSTAT12-2HC

They say you can't have it all — but the Keystone KSTAT12-2HC gets you pretty close, especially if you're after year-round comfort without a sky-high price tag.

This 12000 BTU through-the-wall air conditioner isn’t just for cooling. It also includes supplemental heat, making it a solid pick for those who want a more permanent, all-seasons setup.

Let’s get something out of the way: this unit won’t match a mini split system for energy efficiency or whisper-quiet operation.

However, it’s also way more affordable — and for many homeowners, that's a trade worth making.

The Keystone doesn't have the sleek design or ultra-low decibels, but what it lacks in modern flair it makes up for with good, honest performance and heating capability.

This is a great pick for moderate climates, where you need occasional heat and solid summer cooling. Just keep in mind the supplemental heater only works above 23°F. Below that, it taps out — so if you're in Minnesota or Maine, you’ll need a backup plan.

Performance-wise, the KSTAT12-2HC cools and warms spaces up to 550 square feet with no trouble, and the included remote makes it easy to tweak temps from the couch. It’s not a smart unit, but sometimes simplicity is its own kind of luxury.

You'll need a 230-volt outlet, which is standard for through-the-wall units — and typically comes at the cost of an electrician visit.

And while I respect a good DIY spirit, I only recommend self-installation if you’re 100% confident cutting a hole in your wall. This is a permanent mount, and there’s no “oops” button once you start slicing into drywall.

Once it’s in, this unit hums along reliably, with a built-in dehumidifier, multiple fan speeds, and an energy saver mode that helps offset utility costs. It's not the quietest at 61 dB, so plan your through-the-wall placement away from your bed or desk. 

For anyone wanting a dependable, budget-friendly, through-the-wall AC with bonus heat, the Keystone delivers.

It might not turn heads, but it keeps your space comfortable — and that’s what really counts.

LG Dual inverter LW1222IVSM

If you're looking for an AC that quietly does its job without blocking your view or blasting your eardrums, the LG Dual Inverter LW1222IVSM is an easy pick.

This 12000 BTU window unit packs some impressive tech under the hood, starting with LG’s signature Dual Inverter technology. It uses two inverter compressors to maximize efficiency and minimize noise — a true double win.

The result? Ultra-quiet operation, even at full tilt. On sleep mode, it hums along at just 44 decibels — that’s quieter than most people’s fridge.

Compared to something like the Keystone through-the-wall unit, this LG is whisper-silent and sleek, though it doesn’t offer supplemental heat.

Speaking of sleek: for a 12000 BTU machine, this is a surprisingly low profile window AC at just 15 inches tall, which helps preserve your view (and your natural light).

 It doesn’t look or feel bulky, which is rare in this cooling category.

And because it's a smart AC, you can control everything from your phone using the LG ThinQ app. It’s intuitive, clean, and especially handy if you already use other LG smart appliances — the whole ecosystem works smoothly together.

Of course, you’ll pay a little more for all this inverter and app wizardry, but the trade-off is top-tier performance, better long-term energy savings, and a unit that won’t drive you nuts with constant on-off cycling.

All in all, the LG LW1222IVSM is a modern, efficient, and whisper-quiet AC that’s ideal for anyone who wants powerful cooling without sacrificing peace and window space.

Whynter ARC-122DS

Having two hoses on a portable AC might seem pointless, but that’s not the case. Thanks to its dual-hose design, the Whynter ARC-122DS provides strong and quick cooling in large rooms.

Although single-hose portable units can work well, the fact is that they suck in air from every gap in your home to replace the air they pump outside. That can compromise their efficiency in high heat.

This Whynter unit avoids that issue by drawing in outside air through a separate intake hose. As a result, it can effectively cool big rooms.

Although this unit is actually designed for 400-square-foot rooms (despite it being a 12000 BTU unit), I had no issue bringing a 550-square-foot room down to my target temperature.

There’s one caveat — if the outside temperature rises above 90°F, the Whynter will start struggling.

That’s not a problem, though, since you can remove the intake hose to convert this unit into a single-hose setup, and it'll continue keeping you cool.

Whynter offers basic 3-in-1 functionality with a 24-hour timer and multiple fan speeds, comparable to the SereneLife unit. Learning to use the unit is simple, even without the user manual.

Unlike the SereneLife, this AC is auto-evaporative, recycling condensation water to cool its coils. In 50% outdoor humidity, I had no need to drain this unit.

I did rig up a drain hose out of curiosity, though, and the AC let out two gallons of water in a day. That’s some powerful evaporation!

According to the documentation that comes with the machine, the EER rating is 6.9, not 12, as you may find online.

That's about average for portable ACs, and this unit saves some extra energy by having a 5-degree grace range built into the thermostat. 

It’s up to you whether the energy savings are worth the temperature fluctuations, though.

At 52 dB, this is not the quietest portable AC on the market, as that crown is currently held by units that feature an invertor compressor, but for a conventional dual hose unit, this is fairly quiet.

This unit is well-built and relatively lightweight, and should last for a long time with good care. Whynter thinks so, too, and offers a nice three-year warranty on the compressor.

Overall, it’s a good and surprisingly affordable option for portable cooling.

Black + Decker BPACT12HWT

First things first, the Black+Decker BPACT12HWT portable air conditioner, with its 12,000 BTU capacity, won't effectively cool up to 550 square feet - despite what the listings say.

Instead, I found Black+Decker BPACT12HWT more efficient for 350-400 square foot spaces.

That said, for a portable AC, this unit has a lot going for it. With a 10.43 EER, it's respectably efficient — not quite as impressive as the dual-hose Whynter ARC-122DS, but better than most single-hose models in this class.

One thing I really liked? It's surprisingly compact. It won’t dominate your floor like some portables do, and the sleek, no-frills design makes it easy to tuck into a corner without making your space feel like a server room.

Where it really impressed me, though, was the dehumidification. This unit pulls moisture like a champ, and thanks to its auto-evaporative system, you don’t need to babysit the water tank.

It’s a world away from the B+D model I had in 2009, which needed draining every two hours just to get through the night.

You also get supplemental heat, making this a true year-round option for smaller rooms, offices, or apartments where central HVAC isn’t an option.

Sure, it’s a bit louder than a window unit, and you’ll still need to vent it out a window — but if you’re after portability, dehumidification, and solid 4-season performance, the BPACT12HWT is a reliable pick in a compact package.
