Overall Rating

First up, we have the LG LW1516ER 15,000 BTU air conditioner as our top pick. LG is one of the most reputable brands when it comes to home appliances and electronics. The Energy Star certified model comes with an efficiency rating of 11.9, which is great if you’re looking for an eco-friendly, bill-saving AC unit.

The 15000 unit is ideal for large apartments, a floor of a home, or a vast open living space. Rated to dehumidify at 3.3 pints per hour, it’s also great if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain and humidity.

Suiting windows anywhere between 25 inches to 36 inches in width, the nice thing is the height is of no importance here as this model is only 17 inches tall. Just remember that it’s always recommended to measure your window, so you don’t end up with a model too big or small. Coming with side curtains and insulation strips, you don’t have to worry about leaks coming in or out.

Moreover, the package includes an air conditioner kit – everything you’ll need to install and mount the unit! You don’t have to worry about purchasing any extra tools. You’ll get a filter, side panel leaf covers, support bracket, and window sealing foam, which is also long-lasting. Overall, this will save you some extra cash, plus it’s just a thoughtful inclusion on behalf of LG.

Once it’s all set up, you’ll see that you can choose between “Cool” and “Energy Saver” mode. Cool mode, well, cools the room to your ideal temperature. With Energy Saver mode, once it reaches this temperature, it will turn off and on again if it senses it’s starting to get warmer in the environment surrounding it. Additionally, you can take advantage of the auto-restart, which is particularly handy if the power happens to go out when you’re asleep, keeping you cool and comfortable no matter what.

While it does include only a 1-year warranty, the price point is very attractive. In fact, it’s comparable in price to many models with half the functionality and efficiency this one has.

Next up, we have what may very well be the strongest RV air conditioner currently on the market. The Airxcel 08-0080 Mach 15 is a 115 volt 15000 BTU air conditioner that offers low-cost operation yet substantial power output. The unit itself is also surprisingly affordable.

If you’re nervous about installation, you don’t have to be concerned – the installation of this model was one of the easiest. The lightweight design makes it easy to carry and lift, though it’s admittedly quicker with two people. Even if you have zero experience in installation and DIY projects, you’ll still be able to pull this off quite nicely.

Despite the fact the 15000 BTU RV air conditioner is so light, it’s very durable in every aspect. The motor’s shaft is sealed to keep it safe from the elements, and the shroud is secured with rust-proof, stainless steel truss head screws. The copper tubing is light yet sturdy, with a system made just for heat dissipation.

The only real complaint users had was regarding the noise, which the company does not specify online. While it’s by no means overwhelming, it is noticeable and can make quieter conversations, music, or television more challenging to hear if you’re right next to it. Overall, though, it’s an affordable, convenient, high-quality RV air conditioner that’s perfect if you’re not particularly DIY-savvy.

Amana may not be as well-known of a brand as some of the competitor options on here, but it’s still widely considered to be the best 15000 BTU through the wall air conditioner. If you’re on the hunt for an air conditioner to keep your sunroom, office, or small living space up to 800 square feet temperate, then this is just the model for you.

With a Sound Transmission Class (STC) of 28, less outside noise will be transmitted into your room by means of the AC unit. Due to this, you will have a nice, quiet environment to work, sleep, or relax in.

“This PTAC unit features 2 fans that provide quiet operation while keeping your environment comfortable,” says HVAC Direct.

The American-made model comes assembled, engineered, and produced in the country, and with almost 4 decades of experience, you can expect durability, too. The unit comes in a neutral Stonewood Beige tone, which works well with all kinds of existing décor and won’t scratch easily.

To control operation, the top 15000 BTU wall air conditioner with heat comes with a convenient, user-friendly, 7-button touchpad with a clear LED display, which is nice to use in all types of lighting. It’s here, where you can choose the mode you’d like to select, change the fan speed, as well as use the one-touch up and down temperature settings. If you live in a humid or rainy environment, you’ll love the advanced condensate dispersion system that also prevents large amounts of drainage from the AC. The dehumidification capacity of 4.4 pints per hour will always make sure you and your guests are nice and comfy, even in the hottest temperatures.

Mitsubishi is easily one of the most well-known brands in the world, and for more than 5 decades has managed to stay on top of the mini split industry, too. Their MZ-FH15NA 15000 BTU mini split air conditioner is a wall-mounted model made to be used in single and multi-zone systems.

Right when you receive the AC unit, you can start the installation process right away. Thanks to the wall-mounted design and handy mounting plate, the whole process can be finished in less than an hour. It’s perfect for residential areas like home offices, bedrooms, living rooms, basements, and much more with the ability to address up to 700 square feet.

The Energy Star-rated system is very sleek and quiet, yet operates with exceptional efficiency to offer consistently cold or warm air. This makes it a wonderful option year-round, no matter what the climate in your city is like. Cooling capacities range from 6,450 to 19,000 BTU, and heating ranges from 5,150 to 24,000 BTU.

This is one of the most versatile mini-split models out there, with multiple operating modes, fan speeds, and airflow directions to suit just about any room. Activate Powerful Mode, and it will momentarily boost refrigerant flow and fan speed to create rapid comfort in only a few minutes. However, if you want to keep cooling costs down, simply put it in Econo Cool Mode, which will change the cooling set point and horizontal vanes. Vane control can be set to Wide or Standard settings, while Auto will choose the optimal position depending on the operating mode you have the unit set to.

On the other end of the spectrum, the brand’s Hot-Start Mode eliminates cold drafts through postponing fan operation until the heat exchanger has adequately warmed up. All in all, the 15000 BTU air conditioner 220V model is an excellent choice in just about every regard.

Friedrich is already a very well-respected brand, but their Chill Premier CCW15B10A is one of a kind.

“The Chill Series is Friedrich’s Premium Line air conditioners, an efficient line of air conditioners with programmable controls. It’s everything you want in an air conditioner – easy to install, easy to use, and easy to maintain,” says Total Home Supply. I can’t say I disagree!

With an EER of 11.8, it comes as no surprise that the AC unit is also Energy Star certified. The AC itself is quite affordable, but when you factor this efficiency in, operating it is also low in costs.

What sets the CCW15B10A apart from the rest is its oscillating distribution system, which consists of continuous auto air sweep louvers to cool the entire room. 4-way airflow control will also help cover every inch, so there are fewer hot spots! You’ll also get a 24-hour on/off timer and 3 cooling speeds, all controllable by the included remote control so you can stay comfortable on your sofa or bed.

Installation is one of the easiest, due to the slide-out chassis, allowing for both window and through-the-wall installation. You can also run the power cord on either side of the unit. To top it off, this model comes with noise-reducing design which is rare for a larger BTU window unit.

The 115-volt unit is easy to install and comes with several cooling and fan speed options, a temperature dial, and 8-way directional air louvers to hit every spot in the room. While it may be relatively powerful, it’s also quite efficient with an 11.8 EER, being Energy Star certified!

Next up is the Klimaire, which is not only one of the most aesthetically pleasing air conditioner units, but one of the most economical. While it obviously cools the space in question (up to 700 square feet), the PTAC heat pump also heats it, making it ideal for every season without having to purchase a separate heater.

If you or someone else in your home has allergies, you’re going to love the fresh air intake design along with the washable polypropylene air filter. This filter will make sure your room or area is cleaner than ever before, so everyone can truly relax and be comfortable.

Dip switches provide various personalized settings, depending on your preferences and the situation. It also operates with an optional 24V wall thermostat and remote control for your convenience. However, each AC unit comes with a digital push-button control panel and LED display for easy and quick adjustments, no matter the time of day. It’s here, where you can select your exact temperature, heating, cooling, fan modes, and more.

The only possible improvement various consumers have expressed interest in would be to make the unit easier to install. It is one of the more challenging on our list in this aspect, but aside from that, you can count on it being quiet, convenient, and of course, high performing.

Overall Rating

The Dometic Polar White RV AC unit 15000 BTU is quite possibly the coolest looking model out there. However, it offers so much more than just looks and style. Dometic is a company with an overall excellent reputation, and once you start using the Polar White, it will be easy to see why.

When you first open the package, you’ll find that it comes with a complete non-ducted ceiling kit, meaning that there’s no need to purchase anything else to install it properly. Not only that, but you’ll notice it’s very lightweight, even for an RV air conditioner. As you can imagine, this only facilitates the installation process so you can relax and enjoy it.

You don’t just have to stick with white, either – black is also a sleek option that may blend in better with some RV models. Despite being so light, it’s very durable and fitted with a high-performance motor that will produce enough power to keep your entire home cooled. The custom composite Korad shroud is also laminated to hold up for years to come against harsh UV rays. A 3-inch, deep-drawn G90 carbon streel drain pan comes complete with a powder-coated finish, to ensure it doesn’t scratch or rust.

Finally, you can expect it to be nice and quiet due to the fan motor sound dampening brackets, which will also reduce vibration.

Last, but certainly not least, we have the Koldfront WTC14012WCO230V. If you need a portable air conditioner, you can’t get better than this model. However, it’s important to note that while it does come close, it’s not quite 15000 BTU. It is the most powerful you’ll get out of a portable unit, though.

Despite being so portable and lightweight, it can still cool a 700 square foot room, just like the more prominent, stationary units! Including 4 fan/cooling speeds, you can choose with precision exactly how you’d like the room to feel. Moreover, adjustable louvers allow you to pinpoint specific spots in the space to cool. Depending on the speed and power, noise ranges from 59.2 to 61.3 decibels, which is quiet, all things considered.

To adjust it all, you have a user-friendly interface and a 24-hour timer at your convenience. If you need to remove moisture from the air, the tough dehumidifier can do the job, too. No matter if you have allergies or not, you’ll appreciate the washable air filter, which effectively takes contaminants out of the air and lets you breathe easier.

The 2-year warranty is just a bit better than what seems to be the industry average of 1 year, but there are still many models out there with more extended warranties.

Considerations When Buying A 15000 BTU AC Unit

AC Type

There are various types of AC units out there, but not all will be right for your home. Window ACs must be mounted either through your window or another hole in the wall. RV units will be more streamlined designs and made to not take up as much space.

Coverage Area

As you may imagine (generally speaking), the larger the room is, the more cooling is required. This isn’t a rule, though, as there are other factors to take into consideration here. Rooms are typically sized by area, without considering height.

Higher ceilings mean a room has a greater volume; thus, the space is larger and will demand additional cooling/more BTUs. These aren’t the only factors to remember, as the number/size of windows, sunlight, humans in the room, and heat-generating appliances also affect the power you’ll need in an air conditioner.

Energy Efficiency Rating (EER)

The EER is the measurement of the cooling production of an AC unit in BTUs divided by its electricity usage in kilowatts. Ideally, try to land one with a rating higher than 11.6 and up to 16.2 for optimal performance in hotter temperatures. A 15000 BTU air conditioner will use up around 1,500 watts of electricity per hour if used at regular settings. In the US, this totals to around 12 cents per kilowatt an hour, which isn’t bad at all.

Noise Levels (DBA)

The noise levels of air conditioners vary greatly, from a minimal “humming” noise to conversation interrupters. The levels are measured in decibels (dB). Certain models come with a “Quiet Operation” feature, which is perfect for use in areas of your home that need to be particularly quiet.

Performance Features

As you can probably imagine, not every air conditioning unit is made the same. Certain performance features can enhance your user experience greatly. Let’s take a look at the most popular.

  • Heat Mode:
Heat mode is pretty self-explanatory, but this involves the unit producing warm air into the room until the temperature of your choosing is reached.
  • Sleep Mode:
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night only to be assaulted by a freezing room and an overactive air conditioner? Sleep Mode combats that. As our bodies drop in temperature as we fall into a deeper sleep, the AC units with this feature will increase the temperature each hour to make sure you’re always at your optimal comfort level.
  • Multiple Fan Speeds:
This will offer you the most efficiency and lowest electricity bill. These models will work by blowing at around 150% to cool your home quickly, then going down to about 30-40% capacity once your desired temperature is achieved. At this level, it will merely maintain said temperature, so you don’t have to spend more energy.
  • Auto Setting:
This is the option to have the fan turn on automatically, and when the thermostat reaches your preferred temperature setting, it will turn back off.
  • Remote Control Operation:
Operation with a remote can make things much more convenient for you, as you can turn it up or down to your liking without ever getting up to do so. Just don’t lose the remote!
  • Dehumidifier:
This is a must-have if you live in a coastal area or get regular rain as moisture levels can be high. This mode will keep your home cool and dry by removing moisture from the air inside your house.
  • Timer Settings:
These are nice to have because they will automatically turn off after a particular time of your choosing without having to go about doing it yourself manually. This is great for when you fall asleep or want to keep the house cool while you’re gone, but only momentarily.

Installation Requirements

To get the most from your AC unit, it must be installed appropriately. Depending on which type of AC you go for, keep these aspects in mind.

Window Unit

Ensure a window unit is level so that it drains correctly and relocate any heat-generating devices like televisions or lamps away from it. The window in question must also have dimensions that work with the unit, and that a compatible electrical outlet is close enough to connect to.

Standard window AC units can only be installed in single-hung or double-hung windows, which move up and down rather than side to side. The nice part about them, though, is that venting exhaust isn’t an issue because they’re made to be halfway out of your home, so the exhaust will already be routed outside.

Mini-Split Models

These will require professional installation almost always, as you’ll be running the refrigerant lines from inside to outside your home through a small hole in your wall.

Floor Standing Portable Units

You’ll find that there are both single hose and double hose portable models. The former pulls warm air from the room, moving it past coils cooled by refrigerant, then moving heated air and moisture through the hose and outside. However, as it essentially creates negative air pressure, any cracks around the doors and windows are going to let hot air from outdoors leak into the room.

If you’re addressing a large area, the AC is going to have to work incredibly hard to cool it. They do, though, work perfectly for temporary or portable situations. Dual hose units are ideal for bigger spaces, eliminating the issue of negative air pressure single-hose models can create. They’re also faster but require more power and are more expensive.

Voltage Requirements

The most common voltage ratings for window AC units are 115, 125, and 220 volts. Mini-splits are usually 208/240 volts, and RV air conditioners are also at 115. Just make sure to never run your AC unit outside of these ratings.

Price & Warranty

Price plays a factor in almost everything we purchase. More expensive doesn’t always equal “better quality,” though you may receive extra performance features the further up in price you go. The warranty also plays a huge role here, as some models have much longer warranties than others. The warranty is kind of the manufacturer’s way of attesting to its quality and how long they expect their product to last with regular use.

Types Of AC Units With The 15000 BTU Rating

Mini Split

These operate similarly to a traditional central heating and cooling system, except mini-splits have indoor and outdoor components, while also taking up much less space.

They can both heat and cool the area or room in question.

Window

As you could probably deduce from the name, these are installed in a window and are made to cool one room.

They’re typically the easiest to install and are often very budget-friendly if you’re just looking to cool a single room.

They’re also generally quite energy-efficient and overall, affordable.

Window-Mounted Air Conditioner in Living Room
RV Air Conditioner

These models run on AC power and occasionally solar power if you choose. Due to their location, they offer excellent cooling power and work by removing the heat and transferring it outside of your RV.

Wall AC Unit

Wall AC units function virtually the same way as window models and are self-contained units that remove heat and humidity from the room, transferring it outside. They’re ideal for single room use and are very efficient in power consumption.

Understanding BTUs: When Is A 15000 BTU AC The Right Choice?

The actual method of air conditioning is relatively simple, taking your “room-temperature” air and chilling it. When liquid converts to a gas, it absorbs heat, which air conditioners make sure of.

“Air conditioners exploit this feature of phase conversion by forcing chemical compounds to evaporate and condense over and over again in a closed system of coils,” states How Stuff Works.

The entire process is very similar to how the refrigerator works.

“Air conditioners don’t have the exterior housing a refrigerator relies on to insulate its cold box. Instead, the walls in your home keep cold air in and hot air out.”

BTU stands for “British Thermal Unit,” which is used to measure thermal energy, or the amount of energy required to increase 1 pound of water 1-degree Fahrenheit at sea level. To figure out the size of AC unit you need, simply multiply the length times the width of your home or area you’d like to cool. Then, as a whole number, multiply that total by 25 BTU.

Top 15000 BTU air conditioners will be able to cool anywhere from 700 to 850 square feet of space inside your home, so keep this in mind when choosing the right unit for you.

Think you need a smaller un
