For large rooms over 700 square feet, you'll need an 18,000 BTU air conditioner to get the job done.

I've worked with countless air conditioners over the years, and while there aren’t as many choices in the 18,000 BTU category, I’ve found five window units that deliver powerful, even cooling for big spaces.

Quick glance: My recommendations

LG 18,000 BTU Window AC, Dual Inverter, WiFi...

LG LW1822IVSM

  • Advanced dual inverter
  • Highly efficient - 14.7 EER
  • Wi-Fi integration

LG 18,000 BTU Heat and Cool Window Air...

LG LW1821HRSM

  • Offers heating and cooling
  • Wi-Fi enabled with app control
  • Auto-restart feature

Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A

  • High quality brand
  • Inverter for adaptable cooling
  • Highly efficient - 14.4 EER

When are 18000 BTU window ACs the right choice?

I recommend 18,000 BTU window air conditioners for those who need powerful AC for a large room and where a mini-split heat pump or central AC system isn't feasible.

In my experience, this is where these high-BTU units are most useful:

  • Large spaces at least 700 square feet, particularly open-plan areas with high ceilings.
  • Areas with hotter climates (particularly southern states).
  • Rooms exposed to sunlight or with poor insulation.
  • Busy areas that see more use. I usually install them in kitchens or living areas, where more heat is generated by occupants and appliances.
  • Homes with installation limitations or space constraints that make mini-splits or central AC systems unviable.
  • Budget-conscious homeowners who can't afford $5000 plus on a central AC unit but need high-powered cooling.

Upsides
  • Advanced dual inverter technology
  • Highly efficient - 14.7 SEER and ENERGY STAR rated
  • Wi-Fi enabled with smart integration and ThinQ App control
  • Fast cooling
  • Ultra-quiet running - as low as 44 decibels
  • Easy installation
Downsides
  • Short power cord
  • Pricier model (but still good value)
  • The thermostat can be temperamental and occasionally needs a restart

For me, the LG Dual Inverter LW1822IVSM is the best 18,000 BTU window air conditioner on the market because of its mix of power, efficiency, and advanced features. If you need fast cooling over large areas, it's my top recommendation.

The output and coverage are excellent (1000 square feet), but the speed and precision impressed me most during testing.

In a 750 square foot apartment, it dropped the temperature by 10° F in under 25 minutes and maintained a steady temperature within 0.5° F.

The fast and adaptable cooling is thanks to LG's dual inverter technology, which constantly adjusts output to maximize comfort and limit energy wastage. This helps it reach a 14.7 SEER rating.

This is among the highest efficiency achievable by ACs (even higher than the Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A) and helps keeps running costs down.

Outside of the performance, the LW1822IVSM's cutting-edge smart features stood out. It's Wi-Fi enabled smart AC and integrates with smart devices in your home (like Alexa for voice activation).

It also connects to the unique LG ThinQ App for remote control, scheduling, and monitoring from your smartphone. The ThinQ App is one of the most intuitive apps I've used and is ideal even for less tech-savvy users.

Despite its powerful cooling capacity, the LW1822IVSM operates remarkably quietly, with noise levels as low as 44 decibels. This is, again, among the quietest window ACs you can find.

It's ideal for noise-sensitive areas, and I would have no issues installing it in a bedroom or nursery.

While the unit's power cord could be longer, installation is straightforward, even for beginners working solo - it took me about 30 minutes to get it mounted and set up.

I also found it far more aesthetic than the LG LW1823HRSM or  Frigidaire FHWH184WB2, with a sleek design that blends into living spaces.

The LW1822IVSM is pricey at over $600, but delivers high-powered cooling, energy savings, and smart functionality. I think it's an excellent investment for any large home.

Who should buy it?

The LG Dual Inverter LW1822IVSM is ideal for homes that need frequent cooling and reliable temperature control. I would fit it in any large, open space, but I recommend it for energy-conscious and tech-savvy users.

  • Fairly heavy at 130lbs, you will need a friend to help lift it

If you live in an area with hot summer conditions and mild winters, I recommend the LG LW1821HRSM window unit.

This AC offers powerful 18,000 BTU cooling and supplemental 12,000 heating in one, making it an ideal year-round climate control solution for homes with less space.

During my use, the LW1821HRSM was able to cool around 1000 square feet and warm 400-500 square feet.

Although I wouldn't install it as a primary heat source, it's useful for homes with mild autumns and winters.

What I think sets this window air conditioner apart is how low-maintenance it is, thanks to three key design features:

  1. 1
The simple installation kit comes with all mounting accessories and easy-to-follow instructions. It only took me about 20 minutes.
  2. 2
The user-friendly settings. Once set up, it can be programmed through the app in seconds to maintain a steady temperature.
  3. 3
Wi-Fi integration: Like the LG LW1822IVSM, it can be connected to smart devices or the LG ThinQ App for remote control and monitoring from anywhere. If smart controls aren't your thing, you can also save a few dollars and buy the same model without them.

It's the ideal plug-and-play window unit and can actively cool the room within 30 minutes of unboxing. After that, all it needs is routine maintenance.

While the 11.1 SEER energy efficiency rating is respectable for a combination heater and cooler, it's noticeably lower than some of the other LG models I've worked with (like the LW1822IVSM).

I also found The 57-62dB noise levels noticeable (although not excessive) compared to quieter units like the  LG LW1822IVSM.

However, the LG LW1821HRSM offers versatility and good value for those in varying climates. I recommend it to homeowners who want low-maintenance, user-friendly temperature control.

Who should buy it?

The LG LW1821HRSM is best for areas with varying seasonal temperatures that need year-round cooling and supplemental heating. It's ideal for rentals and older homes where central air isn't an option. I recommend it for those who want a set-and-forget system that works continuously to maintain comfort levels.

Downsides
  • Expensive
  • Less user-friendly controls

The Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A was my go-to high-output window AC before the LG LW1822IVSM, and I still consider it one of the best.

It combines durability, performance, and efficiency, making it ideal as a permanent cooling solution for large spaces in hot climates.

This unit can drop temperatures fast thanks to the 8-way directional airflow. I've seen it cool a 600-square-foot apartment by 10° F in under 30 minutes (almost as fast-acting as the LG LW1822IVSM).

It's well-suited to kitchens or spaces that trap heat and can even handle medium-sized apartments single-handedly.

Despite its impressive cooling capabilities, the Friedrich remains energy-efficient, boasting a 14.4 SEER rating and an estimated annual operating cost of under $160 – I've not seen many 18,000 BTU ACs work more efficiently.

What surprised me most about this air conditioner was the quiet running. It uses Friedrich's QuietMaster technology to keep the decibels below 44 dB and as low as 32 dB on fan-only.

That noise level is unmatched by other large window AC units and makes the CCV18A30A ideal for noise-sensitive homes.

However, what sets this window AC apart for me is the exceptional build quality and durability.

The sturdy outer casing and advanced filter system protect the internal components from external factors, and the precision inverter technology preserves the compressor's lifespan.

This AC is built to last, and I expect it to stay in top condition for 8-10 years.

It's also Wi-Fi enabled for smart integration with the FriedrichGO app, and allows for convenient remote programming and monitoring.

Although I find the user interface less intuitive than LG's, requiring more time and effort to navigate, it's a minor issue compared to the exceptional performance.

The Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A is an expensive model, but I think it's an excellent long-term investment. I recommend it for those seeking a permanent, high-quality cooling solution for hot climates.

Who should buy it?

The Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A air conditioner is best for apartments or large spaces in hotter climates that need continuous or regular cooling with low noise levels. I recommend it for homeowners with more flexible budgets willing to invest in a long-term cooling solution.

Upsides
  • Excellent cooling performance and coverage
  • Simple, user-friendly controls
  • Easy installation
  • More affordable than most 18,000 BTU models
  • Auto-restart functionality
Downsides
  • No smart features or Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Higher noise level, up to 68dB (high settings)

The LG LW1824RD is my go-to choice for users with less flexible budgets who need a reliable window AC for large spaces.

This model prioritizes simplicity and value, delivering impressive cooling without all the bells and whistles.

From a performance standpoint, the LG LW1824RD does not disappoint. The output matches the newer LG LW1822IVSM and Frigidaire FHWH184WB2 powerhouse, with three fan speeds to bring the temperature down quickly.

I particularly appreciate the auto cool mode, which cycles efficiently to maintain consistent comfort and adjust to the conditions.

The installation is straightforward, too (unsurprising, given that LG always delivers easy-to-install models). The manual didn't quite match all the new features of the unit, but it was still simple to follow, and the mounting kit and accessories were all good quality.

Once set up, the LW182RD has convenient features like a remote control, programmable timer, and auto restart - an essential feature for me - making it easy to set and forget.

The 11.8 SEER is good but is noticeably lower than the Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A and LG Dual Inverter LW1822IVSM. However, it should cost under $180 annually to run, which is reasonable for an 18,000 BTU unit.

Where I think the LW1824RD stands out is the value it offers. Despite being one of the more affordable 18,000 BTU window ACs, it delivers reliable cooling, and the high-quality LG components and compressor mean it should withstand heavy use.

The downside is the lack of smart features, with no Wi-Fi connectivity, app control, or smart integration.

However, it makes short work of hot, humid conditions and is cheaper than most other 18,000 BTU window ACs. If you want a simple, budget-friendly option that cools quickly - I recommend the LG LW1824RD.

Who should buy it?

The LG LW1824RD air conditioner is best for homes that need a straightforward and effective cooling solution at a relatively affordable price. I recommend it for homeowners who prefer simple, reliable ACs without Wi-Fi or smart home integration.

The Frigidaire FHWH184WB2 is one of my top picks for those managing heat, humidity, and cold conditions throughout the year.

This heavy-duty window AC offers complete environmental control, which is ideal for larger areas dealing with air quality issues.

With 18,500 BTU output, the Frigidaire FHWH184WB2 matches industry leaders like LG and Friedrich models.

However, during testing, I found its coverage slightly greater, effectively cooling a 1,100-square-foot apartment with its multiple fan speeds and adaptable climate range.

This AC also offers powerful heating up to 16,000 BTUs, outperforming the LG LW1821HRSM and making it an effective supplemental heat source in winter.

What I find sets this window air conditioner apart is the advanced air purification system. It features an Air PureAir® RAC-12 Advanced Filter alongside a washable dust filter to keep contaminants from entering the system - improving the air quality and protecting the internal components so the unit lasts longer.

From a user experience standpoint, the Frigidaire performs well.

It has several programmable settings, including an ECO mode. It has an auto-restart function - a must for me because I often suffer from random power outages.

The drawbacks? It's slightly bigger, bulkier, and less aesthetic than the LG models, and the single-stage system offers less precise temperature control. It's also more expensive, even pricier than the Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A, and only suitable for those with larger budgets.

However, if you want an all-in-one solution that offers heating, cooling, and air purification in one - the Frigidaire is the ideal window unit. I recommend it for rentals or older homes where permanent HVAC systems may not be practical.

Who should buy it?

The Frigidaire FHWH184WB2 is best for homes that need complete environmental control, heating, cooling, and air purification. I recommend it for homeowners with larger budgets who are willing to spend more to maximize home comfort.

Factors to consider when buying an 18000 BTU AC

ACLAB note:

For a thorough understanding on how to buy a best window AC, read my step-by-step guide

You must match the BTU capacity with the area that needs cooling

The number one mistake I see homeowners making is not sizing the air conditioner to the space it's being used in.

Improperly sized air conditioners won't cool a space properly or operate efficiently.

The BTU requirements (short for British Thermal Units) will vary depending on the size of the space it's cooling, and you should measure the space accurately before searching for an AC.

For 18,000 BTU models, I typically recommend a room size of 700-1000 square feet.

The table I've made shows the rough BTU requirements for different-sized rooms. However, the BTU requirements will vary depending on the room and general conditions.

Here are some general rules I apply to determine the size of the ACs accurately:

  • Add 10-20% more BTUs for poor insulation
  • Add 10% more BTUs for high ceilings (over 8 feet)
  • Add 10% more BTUs for rooms with significant sun exposure and decrease by 10% for shaded rooms.
  • Add 4,000 BTUs for kitchens to account for the appliances.
  • Add 600 BTUs for each person beyond two that use the space.
  • Add 10-20% more BTUs for high humidity.

Oversizing and short cycling issues

I've worked with homeowners who want the largest, most powerful air conditioner available—but bigger is not always better for air conditioners because an oversized unit can short cycle.

Short cycling means your air conditioner turns on and off frequently because it is cooling the space too quickly.

It can cause uneven cooling, wear out the internal components, and waste energy - I've seen it almost double the expected running costs for a window air conditioner.

I recommend matching the air conditioner BTU capacity to your room size and conditions for the best results and comfort. Only use powerful 18,000 BTU ACs, like the LG LW1822IVSM or Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A, in large spaces where they can cool effectively and give you the best value for money.

Measure your window and make sure it can handle the weight

It’s crucial to ensure your window air conditioner can be installed properly in your home, especially with larger, heavier 18,000 BTU units.

I recommend:

  • Measuring the window dimensions to check compatibility.
All the air conditioner models on my list will fit on standard windows, but always check the individual specifications.
  • Checking the window strength to see what load it can take.
Check the window frame, material, and condition. In my experience, older buildings may be less stable and will benefit from a lighter model, like the LG LW1822IVSM air conditioner.
  • Fitting a support bracket.
I always use a support bracket with 18,000 BTU units because it takes the strain off the window. The LG LW1822IVSM, LG LW1821HRSM, and Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A all come with a bracket, but you'll have to check with other models.

There aren’t many options available

There is far less variety with 18,000 BTU window ACs compared to 10,000, 12,000, or even 14,000 BTU units.

I've only worked with 5-10 other 18,000 BTU units outside the top five in my list, and their performance has varied.

This lack of competition is because if you need 18,000 BTU, you will often benefit from a fixed mini-split or central air conditioner to meet your cooling needs (these can be more cost-effective long-term).

It’s a less crowded market, so I recommend starting with the models on my list if you’re searching for a powerful window air conditioner.

ACLAB note:

The majority of the 18000 BTU units are window AC units. For through the wall units, you will either need to look into smaller options or mini split variations.

Consider getting energy efficient units

18,000 BTU is a lot of cooling output, and the power draw can be high. Investing in an energy efficient air conditioner can save serious money on running costs.

EER Rating

The energy efficiency of window air conditioners is shown as a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating, with higher ratings meaning higher efficiency. The typical SEER rating for large window air conditioners is 10-15.

I consider anything above 11 highly efficient and recommend a SEER rating of at least 10. The higher the SEER ratings, the lower would be the running costs.

Energy-efficient models are more expensive, but a SEER rating just 1 higher can represent energy savings of 10-20% - so you'll offset the cost in the long run.

To find the most energy-efficient models, I always check:

  • The SEER rating
  • The inverter system. High-end air conditioner models use inverter compressor technology to adapt the cooling output to minimize waste. The LG LW1822IVSM uses dual inverters for even more efficiency, achieving an industry-leading 14.7 SEER.
  • The Energy Star certification. Air conditioner units with an Energy Star rating have met the efficiency criteria set by the EPA and will have lower running costs. While window air conditioners, central ACs and mini-splits are eligible for Energy Star certification, portable air conditioners are not yet considered.

ACLab note:

ACs with inverter ACs are the most energy efficient, but they have a higher upfront cost. To realize the monetary benefit of an energy efficient AC, you will need to run it for a long time.

To keep running costs to a minimum, I recommend the 14.7 SEER LG Dual Inverter LW1822IVSM.

Get a quiet AC if noise is an issue

I have worked with some whisper-quiet models and others that were noticeably loud, and the decibel rating of the unit determines how and where I would install it.

The noise level for large (18,000 BTU) window air conditioners is typically 50-70. It usually depends on a few factors:

  • Compressor type: Inverter compressors are quieter than traditional compressors because they adjust the speed continuously rather than cycling on and off.
  • Build quality: High-quality air conditioner units tend to have better noise insulation. That's how the top-tier Frigidaire FHWH184WB2 stays below 60dB despite its cooling power.
  • Installation quality
  • Fan speed
I recommend choosing a window air conditioner that runs below 60dB for most homes or under 50 dB for bedrooms, nurseries, or offices.

The LG Dual Inverter air conditioner is the quietest option of this size, running around 44dB, and is my top pick for noise-sensitive homes.

Noise Level Window

Pay attention to voltage requirement

Most 18,000 BTU window air conditioner systems require a 230V outlet due to the higher power requirements - all the models I have included need 230 volt outlets.

I recommend checking the air conditioner specifications before you buy to confirm the voltage requirements. If a 230V is needed:
  • Check your circuit breaker.
Your electrical panel will show you the voltage of each circuit so you can determine if you need to upgrade your electrical system. I don't recommend using long extensions to reach a 230V outlet if you have one. Size your breaker properly, otherwise it may trip.
  • Consult an electrician.
If you need electrical work, find a licensed electrician to install a 230V outlet. In my experience, this will cost $300-$800.

Do you value smart features?

The best 18,000 BTU air conditioner models have smart features to make them more effective and convenient. There are a few key features I look for:

smart air conditioner benefits
  • Wi-Fi enabled
This allows for remote control and monitoring via smartphone apps. The LG ThinQ App is the best I’ve used and ideal for less tech-savvy users.
  • Voice control
Smart window air conditioners can integrate with home systems like Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control.
  • Energy monitoring and smart scheduling
Models like the LG Dual Inverter and Friedrich Chill Premier CCV18A30A provide insights to help you use your AC to maximize efficiency and home comfort.
The advanced LG Dual Inverter LW1822IVSM air conditioner is my top pick for those who value user-friendly smart features, with advanced control options far ahead of most units.

However, if you prefer a simple window air conditioner that works reliably without the bells and whistles, I recommend the LG LW1824RD.

ACLAB note:

It may be worthwhile to also check out mini splits or central ACs for high capacity cooling needs.
