Types of Air Purifiers


One of the most common filtering technologies you may come across when looking for air purification is High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA). Typically, most air purifiers that are on the market today use HEPA as one of the primary filtration stages.

HEPA filters are often used due to their efficiency and simplicity. They are very effective with removing small particles out of the air. In order for a filter to be called “HEPA” is must be able to trap 99.7% of particles that are 0.3 microns in size. That’s pretty small!


While HEPA is an excellent technology, it does have some limitations. It is excellent for removing microscopic particles but it may not be the best choice for removal of other types of contaminants.

Nasty bits and pieces of junk floating in the air are bad enough. Odors, hazardous gases, and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) also need to be removed as well.

Activated carbon may be the best choice in these circumstances. When carbon is “activated” (either by heat or chemical treatment) its natural capability to absorb these potentially dangerous compounds is greatly increased.

Most multi-stage air purifiers use both HEPA and a carbon element as their primary filtration methods.


A less common filtration type is UV radiation. That’s not because it is ineffective. It actually can do a pretty good job by actually destroying particles at the cellular level.

The biggest concern with the use of UV radiation all comes down to safety. It typically uses UV-C, which is known to be the type that is most dangerous to humans. The majority of naturally occurring UV-C rays are normally blocked by the atmosphere so we don’t get much exposure to it.


Ionic systems can trap particles just like most other filtration technologies can. The dirty (no pun intended) little secret is that an ionic setup really uses no traditional filters at all.

The process os completed completely by using fancy electronic principles. The air that passes through an ionic stage doesn’t pass through any type of mechanical medium (such as a filter). By applying a negative charge to a series of metal plates, particles are pulled out of the air and stick to the plates themselves.

One benefit is that since there are no filters, there is nothing that you would have to replace. All you do is take the plate assembly out and wash it off to get rid of the crud.

Considerations Before Buying an Air Purifier That Targets Mold

When you are shopping for the best air purifier for mold and mildew, there are many considerations that should factor into your buying decision. Many of them may not be immediately obvious to you, however.

Let’s take a few minutes to review these items so you can make the best, most informed buying decision.

Coverage Area

Air purifiers come in all shapes and sizes. It’s typically a fair statement to say that larger units were intended to purify more air. That is, they are designed to have a larger coverage area.

Coverage area is simply the amount of floor space that an air purifier has the capacity to clean. It is a specification that is typically given in units of square feet (sq. ft.).

The trick for getting the right size unit for your application is to determine the square footage of the room where you plan to install the air purifier. That can be determined by a simple calculation.

To find out the square footage of your intended space, take a tape measure and determine the length (L) of the room. Then measure the width (W).

Once you have those two measurements you simply multiply them to get the overall area of the room: L x W = A (A is for “area”; that is the number you are looking for).

It’s pretty easy to do. Here is a quick example:

Room length = 15’
Room width = 18’
15’ x 18’ = 270 sq. ft.

So in this case, you’ll need to find an air purifier that is designed to have a coverage area of at least 270 sq. ft. We recommend getting a unit that can do a bit more than that just so you are covered.

On the flip side, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to get a unit rated for 1,500 sq. ft. when you only need to clean 270 sq. ft. For the most part extra capacity = increased purchase price, so don’t make the mistake of getting a unit that is too big. There’s no sense in spending the extra money!

Filtration Type

Regarding filtration type, here is where our discussion on the different methods of filtration comes into play.

All of the technologies that can be used for air purification serve a purpose, but each also has their strengths and weaknesses. You should make a point to buy a unit that meets your particular needs, though. For example, what may work best for smoke might not be the best for a mold and mildew application.

As we noted above, for mold minimization we recommend a quality unit that has both HEPA (for fine particulates) and activated carbon (for odor) elements.

Filtration Life

While all air purifiers have some sort of removable filters, how often you may need to change or replace them can differ. Variables for this include the filter technology type and how heavy or light your usage is.

For example, our research shows an average of 2 to 3 years before a HEPA-type filter may need to be replaced. Ionic elements don’t need to be replaced at all as they simply need to be cleaned.

Removable filters that contain carbon elements can tend to last from 3 to 5 years.

It’s important to note that these are just guidelines from the manufacturer. Much of these suggestions are based on “normal” use. Obviously, lighter use will extend the life and heavier use means that you’ll have to change them out more frequently.

One feature that brings a big cost savings benefit are those units where the filters are reusable. Similar to ionic setups, there are some HEPA filters that can be washed out instead of having to buy new ones.

Indicators (Air and Filter)

A very handy feature is having some sort of visual indicator on the base of the purifier. There are two types that we have seen – air quality and filter change.

Air quality indicators give you the ability to measure – you guessed it – air quality. They can give you “status at a glance” as to how clean (or dirty) the air in your room is. Some models even adjust fan speeds automatically based on the overall quality level.

Filter change indicators take the guesswork out of your filter maintenance. They work similar to those oil change monitor systems that are found in most newer cars these days. They take into account your usage and then calculate when would be the best time to get the filters changed or cleaned.

Particle Removal Capacity

For what we have seen with our research, the general indication of how well an air purifier can remove airborne hazardous particles is to mention the HEPA filter specifications.

It’s a fair statement to say that most – if not all – of the units that we have reviewed have a HEPA filter element in them. And for good reason! With the “99.7% of particles as small as 0.3 microns” specification, you can be ensured that the purifier will be doing its job.

You may come across some purifiers that make mention of “PM2.5”. This is a standard that relates to a larger particle size (2.5 microns). Since HEPA traps even smaller particles (0.3 microns) we recommend going with a HEPA based unit over a PM2.5, if all other factors are the same.

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR)

One factor that is a good way to determine the capacity of an air purifier is to review its Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR).

CADR is a measure of how much air volume that can be purified through the unit, given in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The higher the CADR rating, the more clean air that is being circulated in your room.

CADR ratings can vary for the same unit. How? It depends on your intended use, as in what hazards you are primarily looking to reduce. For example, CADR may be different for use in a smoke-filled environment as compared to one that is prone to dust.

Portability & Ease of Use

As far as portability is concerned, air purifiers are typically designed to easily moved around the home. From our research, we have not seen any models that are “hard installed” or “hard-wired”. In fact, getting power to them is as simple as plugging into a standard wall outlet.

This is true for units available for home use by the general public. There are larger, heavy duty units that are meant to be permanently installed. Those are intended for heavy-duty usage in office buildings and commercial environments. We have not included any of those in our review as our intent is to help you find the best unit for your home atmosphere.

From our research, most air purifiers are among the simplest appliances to operate. Some models have just a fan speed switch. Others have more advanced features such as being tied into an air quality indicator that essentially automates operation overall.

Noise Levels

You typically will not notice much noise coming from most air purifier models. Some may be louder than others, but we are not aware of any that are so loud that they will make normal conversation hard to hear.

Where Can You Find Household Mold?

Mold loves wet and humid environments. It can grow almost anywhere moisture is present. According to the CDC:

Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding.
