Analog

HVAC gauges aren’t difficult tools to master, but they do take a bit of getting used to. They serve two primary services. First, they are used to fill systems (or refill) with refrigerant. Connecting the hoses directly to the high and low-pressure lines and to a bottle of refrigerant is a simple process.

By opening and closing the valves, you can control how much coolant is added and when to stop. The first thing you have to do is connect the hoses. The hoses are generally color-coded, red for the high-pressure side, and blue for the low-pressure side.

It is easy to distinguish these lines, as the high pressure is a smaller diameter copper tube than the low pressure.

Near the condenser unit will be a screw-on nozzle with a valve core. Remove the cap and attach the hose ends. You should already have the hoses attached to the manifold. If you haven’t connected the center (usually yellow) hose to a refrigerant tank, the gauges will read the current pressures.
