Frigidaire 5000 BTU Window AC Review

We review and compare the popular Frigidaire 5000 BTU window AC range. Learn if these models are suitable for cooling your home in the summer.

Summer heat and autumn humidity can make any home uncomfortable. Luckily we have air conditioning options to help lower temps and remove excess moisture in the air. With so many brands, models and options, though, it can get overwhelming.

In this Frigidaire 5000 BTU window room air conditioner review, we will examine the Frigidaire brand’s window AC units that put out a comfortable 5000 BTUs. If you need a room AC for sleeping, relaxing, or just to keep cool on hotter days, this is the review for you.

Frigidaire started as a company in 1918 with the rebranding of Guardian Frigerator Company, which was a part of GM. The new brand quickly took to residential needs and started building products and features that end-users were craving at the time.

Since then, Frigidaire continued to grow, expand and innovate small appliances, kitchen goods, and air conditioning. As of today, the parent company behind the brand is Electrolux, which took ownership in 1986. With a laundry range, and air conditioners added back in 1937, the company saw huge success.

Today, the brand continues to push out new products based on their consumer feedback, needs, and desires. So when you need a window AC for your home, Frigidaire is a brand worth investing in.

Unique Features Of The Frigidaire 5000 BTU AC

When it comes to cooling power, low price points, and ease of use, Frigidaire has what you need. Before you buy any window AC model, though, it is important to understand the key factors that go into your final purchasing decision.

Cooling Power

The cooling power is determined by the BTU output of the machine. In the case of the Frigidaire window AC review, all of the models are 5000 BTU output units. This means that they can effectively cool rooms or spaces up to about 200 square feet.

If you have more windows, direct sunlight, heat-emitting appliances near the unit, or high ceilings, this will drop to about 150 square feet. Make sure you know your space and its measurements to ensure a 5000 BTU model will be enough.

Low Noise Functionality

The noise produced by window and portable air conditioners can become quite obtrusive. However, window ACs have an advantage as their compressors are located outside of the house, separated by your wall and window.

Still, a noisy unit can cause you to raise the volume on the TV or while talking. You want to find models with some sound dampening devices, either with internal padding, noise-reducing compressor blankets, or other devices. A good decibel rating is anything under 60dB, though you should strive to at least 50dB or lower indoor noise levels.

Energy Cost & Savings

Energy GuideEnergy consumption is a significant concern for many homeowners. You want a machine that is effective but also efficient. The EnergyGuide stickers will help you determine the most efficient model for the price range or brand you are looking for. However, this is only a best-case scenario.

For example, if your space is larger than the advertised output (300 square feet when the output is effective at 200, for example), the machine will run longer and work harder to cool the space, lowering the efficiency rating.

For window units, any EER rating of 11 or higher is good, and the larger the number, the more efficient the machine is at cooling while keeping costs down.

Size And Coverage

The size and coverage of the unit are also essential to note. You want to ensure that the physical dimensions of the air conditioner will fit in your window. Window ACs are designed for single or double-hung windows, and you must ensure that your window opens wide enough to accommodate.

The width only matters (usually) when you have narrow windows, as the window kits will expand to fill gaps and keep sun, bugs, and air out. Physical size does not correlate to coverage size, either. You don’t need to buy a bigger unit to cool a larger room, for example. BTU output will dictate the efficiency and coverage of the unit.

Temperature Control

Another major factor is the ability to control the temperature and range. Frigidaire has mechanical and digital control panels as well as infrared remote controls. You can set a temperature that the system will run until it is reached, or you can set a timer to run for a specific amount of time before shutting off.

These controls need to be easy to use, understand and set. With all Frigidaire window AC models, it is as simple as turning a dial or pressing an up or down button to set your temp.

Ease of Installation

Installing a window AC isn’t difficult, but some of the models can get quite heavy. Because of this, it is always recommended to have at least two people for an installation. Lifting and placing in the window without causing damage is the main goal, along with personal safety.

Each brand will have slightly different installation steps. Some, for example, require you to open and insert the filter, while others already have it done for you. The window kits that expand to take up the extra space on the sides of the AC unit will also vary in their installation steps. Make sure you read the instructions and follow along carefully for a proper install and application of AC window seal.

Ease of Cleaning & Washable Filters

Almost all window AC units come with a washable filter. These generally slide out from the top or side of the front of the unit and can be rinsed or vacuumed off to remove the dirt, dust, and allergen build-up.

It is important to note that charcoal or carbon filters cannot be washed. You must also ensure the entire filter apparatus is completely dry and reassembled prior to using it again.

Frigidaire is a well-known name in most households. From their kitchen appliances to laundry room products, almost every home in America either knows the brand or owns some of their items. When it comes to window air conditioners, Frigidaire is less well-known.

Since the brand started by taking over the air conditioning section of General Motors, the lesser-known AC side of the company is a bit of a surprise. However, when you dig deep into the brand as a whole, you get a better idea of why.

Frigidaire is a brand that listens to their customers. If a need or desire arises, the company makes a relevant product. In the case of 5000 BTU window ACs, design and additional features are less sought after than high efficiency and performance.

Because of this, Frigidaire ACs aren’t the most beautiful or sleek looking when placed in your window. In addition, you may not find heating options or wireless communications to control the unit with your smartphone.

What you do find, though, is a high combined EER rating and output levels that cool a standard-sized room in less than 5 minutes.

Sizes, Capacities and Coverage Areas

All of Frigidaire’s 5000 BTU models weigh about 40 pounds. There are a couple of pound differences between the notable models, but the FFRA051WAE model, for example, weighs 41.1 pounds and measures 15.25 x 16 x 12 inches.

The largest model (and arguably the best buy overall) is the FFRE053WAE 5000 BTU model. It weighs 44 pounds and is 16 inches wide, taking up the most window space of all options. These minor measurement differences are due to casing and internal part layouts and are about industry standard as far as dimensions go.

All of the models, including the Frigidaire White FFRA051ZA1, have a 5000 BTU output and are designed for 10 x 10 to 10 x 25 foot rooms. This equates to 100 to 250 square feet of coverage. With any of the options, you will find that high output cooling and a large capacity fan push the air and circulate through the room to cool it quickly.

Efficiency and Noise Levels

All of the models are highly efficient, with ratings all-around 12 EER. The two most efficient models are our top pick FFRA051WAE model and the smaller Mini-Compact White FFRE0533S1. These two each have a combined EER rating of 12.6 and are among the most efficient 5000 BTU AC models available.

As with any air conditioner, there will be some noise, and Frigidaire machines are no exception. In general, they are quiet while operating at low speed with about 48dB of noise. However, some of the options can reach 58 to 60dB when running on high for extended periods.

Most of the noise complaints from these (or any brand) come from an improper installation. Rattles, vibrations, and movement noises shouldn’t occur, and if they do, there is usually an installation issue that is to blame, not the machine itself.

Pricing, Warranties and Customer Service

With Frigidaire, you know you are getting a solid, reliable machine. Quick to cool, easy to install, and simple to use, these 5000 BTU air conditioners make life a lot easier to manage, at least as far as climate control goes.

The models are small, designed for a single room, and will cost you less than $200 in most cases. Some of the more in-demand models may be harder to find in stock or have a slightly higher price tag depending on your location, though.

All Frigidaire ACs come with the same warranty, so there is no confusion. You get 1-year coverage on all parts, operations, and functionality. There is also a 5-year warranty coverage for the “sealed system.” This is your compressor and condenser inside the unit.

If you ever have problems, customer service is there to help. You can either get live chat, phone, or email assistance with troubleshooting, warranty claims, or just general questions. You can find all of the contact information, as well as online resources, from their contact page.

Frigidaire Vs Other 5000 BTU AC Brands

LG Dual InverterAs stated earlier in the review, there are many different brands and a lot of different models to choose from. Of course, you can stay standard and more traditional with brands like LG or Haier.

However, if you want more modern designs or other models, Soleus window AC and Midea have U-shaped models to think about.

Frigidaire is a brand that thrives on easy-to-install, easy-to-use machines. They are dependable, reliable, and will cool efficiently for many years as long as they are maintained. However, this can be said of window ACs from any major brand.

LG, for example, has a wide range of window units available in the 5000 BTU range, and each one has a more modern and sleek design than Frigidaire offers.

Haier Window AC

While Haier window ACs are about as traditional and unimaginative as you can get when it comes to aesthetics, they still perform well and keep large rooms cool.

Frigidaire fits in the middle of all of these. They don’t have the sleek and stylish looks of LG, and they perform slightly better and for longer times than the Haier models.

Their price point is about the industry average as well. Not only are Frigidaire models easy to use, but they are quite affordable as well.

Frigidaire Window AC Installation Tips

Installation of all Frigidaire models is clearly outlined in the owner’s manual. These manuals come in the packaging with every model shipped and are generally found right on top of the box when opened.

If you have lost your manual or want to see the installation process before you buy, we will cover it here. This is a general guide for Frigidaire window AC installation, though and not model specific. You can always find your model’s specific manual on the Frigidaire website in the Owner-Center section.

  1. The first step is to remove the AC and window kit from the box and remove all packing materials.
  2. Check the filter, if it is preinstalled, and remove the packaging for that as well.
  3. Ensure all listed parts are accounted for, including window kit screws.
  4. Insert the filter into the filter frame (if equipped) and slide it into place on the front of the unit.
  5. Find the window kit extensions and attach them to the side of the unit using the screws provided to keep them in place.
  6. Using a second person, lift the window AC and place it on the window sill with the pane lip behind the mounting feet on the bottom of the unit.
  7. Extend the window kit panels to fill the gap on either side of the machine and use the provided screws (or adhesive strips) to keep them secure to the inside edge of the window.
  8. Close the top of the window down over the unit and window kit panels.
  9. If there is a gap, you can use rubber or foam weather stripping to close the gaps. Check the bottom for gaps as well.
  10. Plug the unit into the wall outlet and turn the unit on, going through the setup to set the time, temperature, and operation mode as needed.

People Also Ask (FAQ)

Where can you buy Frigidaire 5000 BTU AC?

You can find Frigidaire window air conditioners virtually anywhere ACs are sold. The best deals and current models are best found online through sites like Amazon. However, if you can’t wait and need one today, you will have the biggest selection options and great pricing at brick-and-mortar shops like Home Depot.

How big of a room will 5000 BTU cool?

In general, 5000 BTUs are rated to cool small to mid-sized rooms. Depending on the number of windows, occupants, and heat-emitting sources, you can typically cool between 150 and 250 square feet. This equates to bedrooms, offices and other spaces that measure 10 x 10, 10 x 15, 12 x 10 and 10 x 25 feet.

What is the wattage of a 5000 BTU air conditioner?

Wattage will vary between brands and even models. Typically the wattage range for window AC at 5000 BTU will fall between 300 and 500 watts. Most Frigidaire models use about 400 or 450 watts for this BTU output capacity.

What size of a generator will run a 5000 BTU air conditioner?

In most cases, you will need a 500-watt generator to run a 5000 BTU air conditioner. Keep in mind, though, that this will put the 500-watt generator to full capacity in many cases. If you plan to run more than the AC, you may need a larger generator.

Frigidaire manufacturers and produces some of the most efficient and easy-to-use 5000 BTU window air conditioners currently on the market. However, they don’t have a lot of fancy features you may expect for modern machines.

If you can live without the wireless communications, alternate heat options and fancy looks, the cost-savings and efficient ACs are some of the most reliable and durable you can get. The affordable price and excellent cooling capacity make the purchase well worth it.
