GE Profile Clearview PHNT12CC

While upright-U air conditioners are currently under fire for their potential to grow and distribute mold into your home, reverse-U air conditioners, or saddle ACs, are having their moment as top contenders.

The GE Profile ClearView is one of my favorite saddle air conditioners right now. This inverter AC runs on 12,200 BTUs and can maintain temperatures in any place measuring up to 550 square feet.

If your room is smaller, this model also comes in 10300 BTUs, which is good for spaces up to 450 square feet. 

In terms of features and performance, this model has an Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) of 14.6 and an average noise rating of about 40 decibels.

The standout feature of this GE model is its reverse U design. 

GE specifically engineered this unit to maintain full access to the window opening. I love that I can open and close my window freely to let in natural light and fresh air, even after installing the Profile ClearView.

General Electric has always been ahead of the game when it comes to advancements in AC technology, and the GE Profile ClearView makes that fact obvious.

Unlike other saddle ACs, this one uses ultra-advanced inverter technology, so you can save on energy without sacrificing performance.

The main complaint from GE Profile ClearView customers is that it can be difficult to connect to the compatible SmartHQ app, and some couldn’t connect at all.

I didn’t experience this problem, but if you do, get in touch with GE’s customer support team right away.

GE Clearview AHTT08BC

The GE Clearview AHTT08BC proves that General Electric has truly cornered the market when it comes to saddle-style window air conditioners.

This review focuses on the 8,300 BTU model, which is part of the Clearview line and shares the same smart reverse-U (saddle) design as the higher-end GE Profile PHNT12CC.

The key difference? This version is a non-inverter AC, which means it doesn’t modulate power the way inverter units do. As a result, it’s a bit less energy-efficient, but also comes with a more budget-friendly upfront price tag.

There is also a 6,100 BTU version, but both lower-capacity models in this series use standard compressor technology instead of inverter tech.

What really surprised me about the AHTT08BC is how quiet it is.

Despite being a non-inverter model, it operates at just 41 decibels on low—only a tick above the noise level of the more expensive GE inverter ACs.

That’s a huge win in my book, and much of that quiet performance comes down to the saddle-style build that places the compressor outside the room.

It’s a great fit for medium-sized rooms up to 350 square feet, and thanks to its saddle design, you still get access to your window for light and ventilation—something most traditional ACs can’t offer.

While it may not be quite as energy-savvy as its inverter sibling, the AHTT08BC is still an excellent option if you're looking to replace a recalled Midea U. It offers strong cooling, low noise, and a smart window-friendly design—all at a more affordable price point.

Soleus Air Exclusive

The Soleus Air Exclusive is not only a great air conditioner, but it also functions as a heater, so you can use it throughout the year. 

The heating function is actually why I purchased the Soleus unit in the first place. I installed the appliance in a rental home in Ohio, which is known for its drastic temperature changes from season to season.

After using the Soleus in both the summer and winter, I can honestly say that it performs well for both heating and cooling.

The Soleus unit is available in both 6000 and 8000 BTU ratings. 

The inverter technology that drives the Soleus isn't as advanced as the GE Profile ClearView, which accounts for the lower efficiency rating of 12 SEER. 

However, the inverter compressor and its design does grant it one of the quietest ACs. With 38 dB noise level, this AC is almost inaudible.

Aside from the heating function, my favorite thing about the Air Exclusive is its low-profile design.

It sits low on your windowsill, so similar to the GE Profile Clearview, it’s a great choice if you want expansive outdoor views and more light.

R.W. Flame U-Shaped Window AC

With a name like R.W. Flame, you’d expect this thing to heat up a room—not cool it down. 

Irony aside, this budget-friendly U-shaped window AC delivers some seriously solid cooling performance for under $300.

It’s one of the most highly rated affordable saddle ACs out there, and I’ve been genuinely impressed with what you get for the price.

This non-inverter unit is available in 10,000 BTU and 12,000 BTU versions, making it a great fit for medium to large spaces that need consistent, effective cooling.

Now, I won’t sugarcoat it—this is the loudest model in my roundup, with a listed noise level of 45 decibels on low. 

Here’s the catch, though: 45 dB is still much quieter than your average window AC, and leagues better than any portable unit I’ve used over the year. It’s not silent, but it’s far from disruptive, and for most users it’ll blend into the background hum of daily life.

Like other U- and saddle-shaped models, the compressor sits outside your window, which helps cut down on indoor vibration and lets you open the window for fresh air or natural light.

Installation is straightforward, and the unit feels surprisingly sturdy for the price. Unlike some saddle ACs that only require 11 or 12 inches of clearance for installation, the R.W. Flame requires 16 inches of clearance, so that is something to consider.

One thing to note: unlike the GE models, there are no WiFi or smart app controls here—this one sticks to the basics. For the budget-conscious, that tradeoff might be well worth it.

It’s not the sleekest or most advanced AC on the list, but if you’re looking for maximum cooling per dollar, the R.W. Flame is a strong contender. Flame by name, chill by nature.

Windmill WhisperQuiet

If you liked the Midea U for its smart features, you’re not without options for smart alternatives.

The low profile, compact Windmill AC is an ideal solution when it comes to smart air conditioners with style. 

Not only is the system easy to use, but the brand behind it has some of the most responsive and caring customer service reps in the business.

This WhisperQuiet model has just a slightly higher sound rating than the GE Profile Clearview, and registers at just 42 dB on low.

This is the option I typically choose when my customers are looking for a smart window AC of 10000 BTUs (which typically covers 450 square feet). 

However, for those who like the Windmill, this model is also available in 6000 BTU, 8000 BTU, and 12000 BTU. Just note that the 6000 BTU version doesn’t carry the “WhisperTech” tag.

There are a lot of features on this compact AC. The auto-dimming digital display will show you the temperature, mode selection, and WiFi connectivity.

When the room gets dark, the display will dim to not cause a distraction, which I love when I’m trying to sleep.

On top of all that, I appreciate that I can use the included remote control, the Windmill Air App, or even Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa enabled devices for voice control. 

No matter where you are or what is going on, you can have complete control over your home’s temperature.

I find the setup of the Windmill app to be easier than that of other smart appliances I’ve worked with, including the GE app. 

The system is easy to install, too. With the window kit coming already assembled, I just have to take it from box to window and tighten a few screws. 

The Windmill does take up 13.3” of height in a window space. However, once set up, it’s ready to use the system and have cooler air in your home in less than 10 minutes. This is the one I recommend for my clients who want to DIY.

With an EER of 15 and Energy Star certification, the Windmill WhisperQuiet is a good choice for your wallet long-term, too.

LG Dual Inverter

I love it when clients ask me to outfit a large room with AC because they are always so surprised when I can pull it off with just one large window unit. 

For large spaces of up to 700 square feet, my go-to window AC is the 14000 BTU LG Dual Inverter. 

Although, I love this window AC Midea U alternative because it comes in 7 different sizes, ranging from 8000 BTUs all the way up to 24000 BTUs. Just note that the extra large models require a 230 volt outlet. 

The LG Dual Inverter 14000 BTU  option is proof that low profile units exist – with premium features and for under $600, too.

This inverter AC has all the top-tier WiFi features using the LG ThinQ app, and my clients love that they can also use it with voice commands when paired with their Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

With an EER of 14.7 and Energy Star certification, this one will be easy on your energy bills.

Their Energy Star rating suggests that this unit will only cost $29 annually to run (assuming you’re using it seasonally). 

Inverter technology means that this LG model runs super quietly. On low, it registers at just 44 dB, which is almost as quiet as my top choice, the GE Profile Clearview, at 40 dB. 

I recently installed this model in a conference room at a law firm, and my customers have had zero complaints about the noise levels.

The one downside of this model is that it is a heavy monster, weighing 98 lbs. You can bet that when I install this one, it’s a three-person job to position it just right while making sure it stays supportive.

Are all Midea air conditioners recalled?

No, the recall only applied to the U-shaped air conditioners.

Do any alternatives allow me to open the window like the Midea U?
