Evaporative coolers are NOT ACs

This is a common misconception I encounter.

While both cool your space, air conditioners use refrigerants and compressors to remove heat from the air and lower the temperature. Within this process, dehumidification occurs.

In contrast, evaporative coolers use the natural process of water evaporation to cool. As evaporation occurs, moisture (humidity) is added to the air.

These differences affect their efficiency and suitability for different climates.

Who is HESSAIRE MC18M best for?

I recommend the HESSAIRE MC18M for anyone looking for a well rounded indoor and outdoor evaporative cooler with a great value for money.

What you will like
  • Impressive cooling power
  • Only weighs 16.5 lbs when empty
  • Runs quietly
  • Vehicle power compatibility for outdoors
What you won't like
  • Needs proper ventilation to perform well
  • A one-year warranty feels limited

What makes the Hessaire MC18M top my list is its high-density XeL50 media, which expands the evaporation surface by 80%. That's serious cooling efficiency.

It's a real crowd-pleaser in hot, dry climates, thanks to its powerful 1,300 CFM airflow. I've seen units with such an airflow volume cooling open spaces of up to 500 square feet.
HESSAIRE MC18M

At around $160, this is my go-to unit for larger spaces like patios, warehouses, and outdoor events, as it includes a patented axial propeller that throws cool air farther.

The 4.8-gallon water tank provides a solid 3-4 hours of continuous cooling before needing a refill, outperforming many pricier evaporative air coolers I've worked with.

At just 85W power consumption, I've had clients call me, amazed at how little impact it had on their electricity bills compared to traditional portable air conditioners they've used before.

I particularly appreciate the 5-setting control knob, which is simple but works.

I've also seen the two cooling speeds and two fan-only modes covering pretty much every scenario you'd ever need.

If you want a significant power boost, I'd recommend the Hessaire MC37M next on my list, which I find suitable for extended cooling periods.

And for smaller areas, the Honeywell CS10XE, with a nearly similar price tag to the MC18M, has a limited 300 CFM that often fits enclosed spaces like bedrooms or home offices.

Who is HESSAIRE MC37M best for?

I recommend the HESSAIRE MC37M for those looking for a high quality cooler to cool down a fairly large living area.

What you will like
  • Optimal cooling distribution with oscillating louvers
  • Durable build quality
  • Easy mobility with four casters
  • 10.3-gallon tank reduces frequent refills
  • Garden hose adapter for continuous water supply
What you won't like
  • High water consumption rate
  • Less convenient manual controls

I know how reliable the Hessaire MC37M swamp cooler can be, owing to its power being a step up from the MC18M.

3,100 CFM is impressive airflow, and I reckon it could cover larger areas of up to 950 square feet.

I often recommend it over models like Honeywell or Dreo for its 10.3-gallon capacity, which appeals to clients who don't want to struggle with frequent refills.

Its three-panel intake system expands the evaporation surface by about 80% compared to single-panel systems, which I find noticeably cooler air output.

A client I've fitted this unit for enjoys about 3-4 hours of continuous use without needing a refill.

The oscillating louvers are my other standout feature. They distribute cool air evenly across large spaces, eliminating hot spots that I often encounter with basic evaporative coolers.

Like the Hessaire MC18M, the fan has a patented winged prop design, which I found handy for throwing cool air further than expected.

HESSAIRE MC37M

Most polypropylene evaporative coolers I've fitted are durable in various weather conditions, and most clients speak highly of this unit's construction.

Overall, I'd pick this unit over pricier options like the Hessaire MC61M for a mid-sized space.

At 39 pounds, this unit felt slightly heavier than the Hessaire MC18M when setting it up, but it's still manageable.

Who is Honeywell CS10XE best for?

I recommend the Honeywell CS10XE if you want a stylish, quiet and a feature rich evaporative cooler that can also clean the air.

What you will like
  • Active carbon filter for cleaner air
  • Consumes only 102 watts
  • Heat-safe casing enhances safety
  • Easy to fit in small spaces
  • Programmable timer for unattended operation
What you won't like
  • Limited cooling for larger spaces
  • Lower airflow compared to larger models

After tinkering with countless cooling options, the Honeywell CS10XE's 300 CFM punch didn't feel like much.

Still, its coverage area of 150 square feet, as the brand claims, was accurate.

One of the biggest draws for me was the energy efficiency. The cooler consumes a measly 102 watts of power, a far cry from the energy-guzzling AC units I've installed.

I'd pick this to spot cool small areas with less than 60% humidity.

For those whose safety is a concern, I find its thermal overload protection and heat-safe internal casing convenient for peace of mind.

While the 2.6-gallon water tank may prompt more frequent refills than the HESSAIRE MC18M, I appreciate how its digital display and energy-saving timer offset this inconvenience.

The set-it-and-forget-it timer is programmable for up to 7.5 hours, which is more than enough for an unattended operation period in most households.

I prioritize safeguarding my home against contaminants, and the Honeywell CS10XE has a washable active carbon filter that works just fine for clients I've helped purchase and install the unit.

Unlike central AC, I'd recommend this unit to anyone looking to save on energy costs, thanks to its refrigerant-free cooling.

I'd steer clients with larger spaces towards Hessaire models. For those on a strapped budget but who want better cooling capacity, VAGKRI offers great value.

Honeywell CS10XE

The Honeywell CS10XE's 150 square foot coverage is modest.

That said, it is capable of cooling a bedroom or small office.

Who is HESSAIRE MC61M best for?

HESSAIRE MC61M offers the best value for large open spaces. This can include a large living room or even your garage or patio.

What you will like
  • Exceptional cooling for large open spaces
  • Extended cooling without frequent refills
  • Its 3-panel system outperforms older models
  • Easy to move during installation
What you won't like
  • Higher water consumption
  • Noise level could be disruptive

The Hessaire MC61M is my go-to swamp cooler for households battling sweltering heat.

With a monstrous 5,300 CFM airflow, I've seen it transform stifling 1,600-square-foot warehouses into comfortable work environments.

HESSAIRE MC61M
What sets it apart is the 3-panel intake system, as the air movement is immediately noticeable once I fire up the unit.

Clients in dry climates that I've persuaded into buying this unit say they find its design, paired with the XeL50 media, outperforms their old single-panel units.

In a recent installation at a busy workshop, the 4.6-gallon tank was a time-saver, running for nearly four hours before needing a refill.

Customers who come to me with all-day cooling as their top concern also speak highly of its garden hose hookup, which adds to the cooler's flexible capabilities.

At 430 watts, it's not the most energy-efficient model I've worked with. Still, it's a solid improvement compared to the power-hungry AC units I often replace.

Of its three speed settings, I appreciate how the lowest setting comes in handy for overnight use to minimize noise. One drawback I always warn clients about is the noise.

The noise level was stuck at 63 dB, so it's noticeable. In an office installation, we had to adjust the layout to keep it away from workstations.

I often recommend the smaller MC37M for mid-sized areas where  this one might be overkill.

The VAGKRI Air Cooler, at 2,100 CFM, is closer to the MC37M in performance. It's a good budget option, but I prefer the MC61M's power for huge spaces.

Who is Dreo IceWind best for?

I recommend Dreo IceWind for those looking to seriously cool down without needing an air conditioner.

What you will like
  • Energy-efficient at just 50 watts
    Impressively hushed operation
  • Wide 80° oscillation for better air distribution
  • Enhanced cooling with included ice packs
What you won't like
  • 212 CFM is somewhat limited
  • Smaller water tank may require frequent refills

The Dreo Tower Fan with Evaporative Cooling caught my eye recently when a client asked for a compact cooling solution for their home office.

At 212 CFM, it's not the powerhouse you'd find in larger units I've installed, but it has solid capacity for personal use.

I've owned this swamp cooler. It blew cold air at up to 21 feet, covering the far ends of my living space.

What really stood out during setup was its 50-watt power consumption, a breath of fresh air for clients worried about their utility bills.

Noise levels are crucial in smaller spaces, and at 35 dB, this Dreo model is impressively quiet. This low noise level is a plus for light sleepers or those easily distracted.
Dreo IceWind

The 80° oscillation feature is more than just a selling point in my books.

It helps distribute cool air more evenly than static models, eliminating those annoying hot spots I often encounter with basic coolers.

I've like the inclusion of ice packs make a noticeable difference in cooling performance, especially on those scorching summer days when every degree counts.

For comparison, the Honeywell CS10XE, which I often suggest for small spaces, uses 102 watts for 300 CFM.

The Dreo offers less airflow but at half the power consumption; an impressive feat of efficiency.

However, I'd still recommend units like the Hessaire MC37M or MC61Mfor larger areas or more powerful cooling needs.

Who is VAGKRI Air Cooler best for?

I recommend VAGKRI Air Cooler for those looking for a powerful evaporative cooler at a budget.

What you will like
  • Powerful airflow
  • Lowers temperature by 8°F in 30 minutes
  • Wide 120° oscillation for even cooling
  • Garden hose hookup extends cooling
  • Flexible three-speed settings
What you won't like
  • Cheap construction
  • Can be noisy at higher speeds

In my years as an HVAC expert, I've found that 2100 CFM is typically reserved for pricier models.

This level of airflow is enough to effectively cool spaces up to 600 square feet, though I'd be cautious about the manufacturer's 700 square foot rating.

My clients are happy with how the VAGKRI evaporative cooler drops the temperature by 8°F in just 30 minutes.

The 8-gallon tank is somewhat convenient for maintenance since most units I service in the $300 price range max out at 5-6 gallons.

Another smart addition is the garden hose hookup, which I've used for extended cooling outdoors. I ran the unit for more than 12 hours without a hitch.

At 105W, it's not the most energy-efficient model I've worked with.

It offers a balance of power, efficiency, and affordability.
VAGKRI Air Cooler

However, for clients concerned about energy bills, I often highlight that it's still a fraction of what a traditional AC unit would consume for the same space.

The 120° oscillation feature also stood out for me since its wide angle ensures even cooling throughout, eliminating cold spots (a typical downside I often encounter with standard units).

Its three-speed settings offer flexibility, though I usually prefer the medium setting for a balance of cooling and noise level.

A 24-hour timer is handy for energy management. Setting it up to coincide with peak heat hours saves unnecessary runtime.

For medium-sized spaces (400-600 square feet) in dry climates, the VAGKRI is often my go-to recommendation.

The Dreo IceWind or Honeywell CS10XE remain better options for small, personal spaces due to their lower power consumption and quieter operation.

Who is Evapolar evaCHILL best for?

I recommend Evapolar evaCHILL as an excellent compact swamp cooler to cool down your personal space.

What you will like
  • Lightweight and ideal for personal use
  • Lower power consumption of 7.5 watts
  • Noise level is suitable for quiet environments
  • Uses natural evaporative cooling
  • USB connectivity is convenient for various settings
What you won't like
  • Effective only in very small spaces
  • The 800 ml tank requires regular refilling

A client hired me to help them handpick a personal, portable cooling option, and the Evapolar evaCHILL ticked all the boxes.

Its 3-in-1 functionality (cooling, humidifying, and air purifying) also stood out.

While 49.1 CFM isn't the typical capacity I've worked with, I still find it solid for close-range personal use.

Besides the ultraportable design, I was struck by how effectively the unit cools within 3 to 5 feet.

Compared to the bulkier Honeywell CO60PM, which I often recommend for larger spaces, the evaCHILL is easy to relocate and set up as it's powered via USB.

What's quite impressive for its size is how I experienced 8 hours of consistent cooling using its 800 ml water tank.

I know units like the Hessaire MC37M run much longer without refilling, but evaCHILL's tank would suffice for personal use in a small office that doesn't exceed 26 square feet or during travel.

I appreciate its natural evaporative cooling technology, which doesn't use Freon-like liquids, and that suggests the brand is eco-conscious.

Evapolar evaCHILL

I find a maximum noise level of 50 dB quiet enough for most settings, and that's crucial for me as many clients require a unit that won't disrupt work or sleep.

Consuming only 7.5 watts, my clients say it's far more economical than traditional air conditioning units.

From an HVAC expert's standpoint, the evaCHILL isn't designed to compete with larger, more powerful units like the Hessaire MC37M, but it excels in its niche.

Who is Portacool PACJS2401A1 Jetstream 240 best for?

I recommend Portacool PACJS2401A1 Jetstream 240 for those who do not mind paying a premium for a very powerful evaporative cooler for large commercial spaces.

What you will like
  • High airflow capacity for large spaces
  • Its 189-liter tank supports extended operation
  • Robust construction ensures longevity
  • Durable build with high-quality evaporative media
What you won't like
  • High initial cost
  • Manual controls lack convenience

When hired to fit a commercial-grade evaporative cooler, I often pick the Portacool Jetstream 240 for its notable performance.

I recommend this to clients whose concern is industrial airflow capacity.

At 4500 CFM, that's robust airflow to cover larger stifling environments and a solid step up from Hessaire MC37M.

My clients are thrilled with the swamp cooler's 189-liter tank since they don't struggle with frequent refills in high-demand settings.

The unit surpasses VAGKRI Air Cooler's 8-gallon capacity, and I find it best for continuous operation.
Portacool PACJS2401A1 Jetstream 240

Despite its massive size, the freestanding, portable design makes moving the unit around relatively easy, from what I've experienced.

The physical controls are straightforward, though some of my clients prefer digital interfaces in other models like the Honeywell CS10XE.

Consuming just 115 watts would be optimal for lowering energy bills, and that's the same energy efficiency I've seen with the Dreo IceWind swamp cooler.

In my books, a larger drain for easier maintenance and Kuul Comfort evaporative media means the manufacturer built it to last in commercial settings.

ACLAB note:

Unlike portable AC, evaporative coolers do not have to be vented. However, using it in an enclosed space will increase the humidity levels and could lead to unhealthy levels of moisture without ventilation. Thus, ventilation is highly recommended.

Swamp coolers work best in hot and dry climates

Evaporative coolers are best for hot and dry climates, like deserts.

As warm, dry air passes through the cooler's water-saturated pads, rapid evaporation occurs, drawing heat from the air and significantly lowering its temperature.

I put a swamp cooler in a hot, dry climate with 95°F air temperature and 10% relative humidity, and it cooled the air to around 76°F.

However, I wouldn't recommend evaporative coolers for high-humidity environments.

When humidity exceeds 60%, the air is already saturated with water vapor, leaving little room for additional evaporation.

The Department of Energy also points out that these models are not ideal for areas where water use is regulated due to drought.

How to choose the right evaporative cooler

Type of evaporative cooler to consider

For indoor use, stylish units like the Honeywell CS10XE are popular as they find it compact, energy-efficient, and perfect for small spaces up to 150 square feet.

If a client needs versatility and robust cooling for larger areas, I'll recommend indoor and outdoor units from Hessaire, such as the Hessaire MC18M or MC37M.

A personal evaporative cooler like the Evapolar evaCHILL is my go-to for desktop use or small personal spaces, thanks to its 3-in-1 functionality (cooling, humidifying, and air purifying).

I often pick the Portacool PACJS2401A1 Jetstream 240 for clients in industrial or commercial settings.

Its powerful 4500 CFM airflow and large 189-liter tank make it suitable for warehouses, workshops, or large outdoor events.

Understanding cooling capacity versus coverage area

It's crucial to choose a unit that can effectively cool your space.

For instance, the Hessaire MC18M can cool up to 500 square feet, while the Hessaire MC61M can handle up to 1600 square feet.

Always err on the side of caution and choose a slightly larger capacity than you think you need.

CFM describes how powerful the fan is

Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) helps determine a cooler's effectiveness. Higher CFM means more air movement and potentially better cooling.

I find the Hessaire MC61M, with its impressive 5,300 CFM, ideal for large spaces, while the Dreo IceWind's 212 CFM is often suitable for personal use.
CFM is cubic feet per minute

ACLAB note:

The higher the CFM of an air cooler in relation to the tank size, the faster it will dry the tank out.

Consider the wattage if you want to save up

I always emphasize the importance of wattage for clients concerned about energy costs. The Dreo IceWind, consuming only 50 watts, is incredibly efficient for its size.

In contrast, the Hessaire MC61M uses 430 watts but covers a much larger area. It's about finding the right balance for your needs and budget.

Tank size and run time

The Hessaire MC37M, with its 10.3-gallon tank, offers extended run times, while the Evapolar evaCHILL's 800ml tank is suitable for personal, short-term use.

I tell clients to consider their usage patterns when selecting tank size.

Runtime evaporative tank

Ease of use, setup, and maintenance considerations

For clients whose user-friendliness tops their checklist, I help them look for features like remote controls, multiple fan speeds, and easy refill options.

The VAGKRI Air Cooler, for instance, offers a 24-hour timer and remote control for convenient operation.

The Hessaire models also often include garden hose adapters for continuous filling, a massive plus for outdoor use.

Evaporative coolers are generally loud, so beware!

I know how noisy evaporative coolers can be, especially at higher speeds. The Dreo IceWind operates at a quiet 35 dB, making it ideal for bedrooms or offices.

In contrast, larger units like the HESSAIRE MC61M can reach 63 dB, which might be disruptive in quiet environments.

ACLAB note:

The higher the CFM, the louder an evaporative cooler is generally.

Additional features to look for

I'd also consider these extra features to enhance my convenience:

  • Oscillating fan: I appreciate how the VAGKRI Air Cooler's 120° oscillation ensures even cooling.
  • Water level indicator: I find it essential for timely refills.
  • Caster wheels: Larger units like the Hessaire models feature caster wheels for easy maneuverability.
  • Price and warranty: Consider long-term value. For instance, the Portacool PACJS2401A1, while expensive, offers a 3-year electrical and lifetime housing warranty.

FAQs

How can I make swamp cooler produce colder air?

To make a swamp cooler product colder air, fill the water tank partly with ice.

Where is a good place to buy evaporative coolers?

Most chain stores such as Target, Walmart, Lowe’s and Home Depot will be your best bet for purchasing evaporative coolers. If you prefer to shop online, Amazon will have the largest selection, best prices, and usually have deals and specials on older models.

So which one is the best evaporative cooler for you?

I make sure to match the cooler's capacity to a client's space size and check the wattage to estimate running costs.

Remember, evaporative coolers may not suit all environments. In humid areas, traditional air conditioning might be more appropriate.

After carefully considering various factors like cooling capacity, CFM, energy efficiency, and additional features, I highly recommend the HESSAIRE MC18M as the top choice for most users.

With 1,300 CFM, it effectively cools areas up to 500 square feet, making it suitable for a wide range of spaces.

My #1 Recommendation
